BR Gavai was suggested for the position of 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI)

India’s Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna suggested the government to appoint Justice B.R. Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI). Chief Justice Khanna’s retirement on May 13 is preceded by this important recommendation. The Law Ministry requests the departing Chief Justice’s recommendation for his successor in accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure that governs the appointment of the Chief Justice of India and the Supreme Court judges. The appointment of the next CJI is formally started by the government’s written letter requesting this procedure.

Justice Gavai, who was born in Amravati on November 24, 1960, began practicing law on March 16, 1985, after becoming a member of the Bar. His father, Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai, often known as “Dadasaheb,” was a well-known Dalit leader who was highly respected in the public sphere and a former governor of Bihar. In terms of seniority, Justice Gavai will be the next Chief Justice of India. On May 24, 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court, and on November 23, 2025, he will retire. He will serve as the head of the judiciary for just over six months if the government notifies him of his nomination.

Justice Gavai, a Supreme Court judge, made significant decisions during his tenure. He affirmed the Constitution’s abrogation of Article 370, struck down electoral bonds, and drafted guidelines against illegal demolitions. He also contributed to the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes for education and employment benefits. Gavai’s legal practice began in the Bombay High Court and he became a Permanent Judge in 2005.
