Dr. Sukhato A. Sema, a MLA from 13 A/C Pughoboto, has written to the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, requesting enhanced Central funding of 80-90% for food processing projects in the North Eastern region, particularly Nagaland. Dr. Sukhato highlighted the challenges faced by the Nagaland region, including poor connectivity, transport delays, and a severe shortage of facilities like cold storage, warehousing, and modern processing units. These issues lead to high post-harvest losses, affecting farmer incomes and regional food security. To formalize and upgrade these units, significant investment in technology, training, and market access is needed.
Dr. Sukhato emphasised that government assistance was necessary to reduce risks and ensure the sustainability of initiatives, pointing out that rural businesses lacked access to finance and financial services. Additionally, he emphasised the Northeast’s strategic significance due to its international borders and potential to support national integration and growth. The region has historically benefited from a 90% grant to 10% loan ratio in schemes, hence Dr. Sukhato asked the Centre to keep using the Special Category State status. In line with the government’s national strategy, he claimed that more central spending would promote inclusive development, increase jobs, and decrease waste. For the benefit of the area and its citizens, Dr. Sukhato said he hoped the Ministry would give the suggestion careful consideration.
