ENPO reaffirms 2019 ‘Peaceful Zone’ pledge amid ongoing land dispute

The Eastern Naga Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has reaffirmed its commitment to the December 18, 2019, declaration of Eastern Nagaland as a “peaceful zone” amidst the ongoing land dispute between the Tikhir and Khiamniungan tribes. In a joint statement issued by the Khiamniungan Tribal Council (KTC) President L. Ngon Khiamniungan, Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC) President P. Timong Tikhir, and witnessed by ENPO President Chingmak Chang, the two communities pledged to uphold peace and mutual respect during social events and festivals in Thonoknyu town until the land ownership issue is resolved.

The joint declaration emphasized the need for “amicable spaces” and called for disputes within Eastern Nagaland to be localized and resolved through peaceful dialogue. “Henceforth, any disputes or misunderstandings within the Eastern Nagaland people shall be resolved within the concerned group through dialogue, avoiding escalation,” the statement reminded. ENPO urged both tribes to adhere to the principles of the 2019 pledge in the larger interest of peace and harmony in the region. The organization called for patience and restraint, emphasizing that maintaining the spirit of unity is crucial until a permanent solution is achieved.

The ongoing land dispute in Thonoknyu town has long been a sensitive issue, with both communities asserting their claims. However, ENPO’s continued efforts to mediate and foster understanding between the two groups reflect its dedication to preserving peace across Eastern Nagaland.
