Faster cheque clearance from tomorrow!

Cheque clearance is set to become faster and more efficient with updates to the Cheque Truncation System (CTS), which currently processes cheques in batches. From October 4, banks will clear cheques within hours on the same working day by scanning and sending cheque images and Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) data to the clearing house, which forwards them to the drawee bank throughout the day.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is implementing this in two phases. Phase 1 (October 4 to January 2, 2026) sets a 7 pm deadline for cheque confirmation; if not confirmed, the cheque is automatically settled. Phase 2 (starting January 3) shortens the response time to three hours, pushing banks for quicker clearance.

Additionally, the Positive Pay System enhances security for cheques above ₹50,000, with compulsory verification for amounts over ₹5 lakh by matching key cheque details shared in advance.

Customers should maintain sufficient balances and provide accurate cheque details to avoid delays or bounces. Faster cheque clearance will improve cash flow management, reduce errors, and enhance the overall banking experience.
