From 1896 to 2026: BTS Bridges Centuries with Emotional ‘Arirang’ Animated Comeback Trailer

In a powerful tribute to Korean heritage, global icons BTS have unveiled an animated teaser for their upcoming fifth studio album, Arirang, weaving a narrative that spans over 130 years of musical history. Released on March 13, 2026, the trailer, titled “What Is Your Love Song?”, draws direct inspiration from a 19th-century historical event documented by The Washington Post. It traces the journey of seven young Korean students at Howard University who, in 1896, produced one of the earliest known audio recordings of the traditional folk song “Arirang.” The animation masterfully mirrors the historical “seven” with the seven members of BTS, depicting the students crossing the Pacific to share their culture—a poignant parallel to the group’s own rise as global cultural ambassadors. The visual journey culminates in the present day, transitioning from the crackle of an antique phonograph to the roar of a modern stadium bathed in the group’s signature purple light, symbolizing the enduring spirit of “han”—a uniquely Korean blend of sorrow, resilience, and hope.

This conceptual deep-dive marks BTS’s first full group project in nearly four years, following the completion of their mandatory military services. BigHit Music stated that the creative direction aims to introduce international audiences to the “unofficial national anthem” of Korea, encouraging listeners to connect with the emotional depth of the lyrics beyond the surface of pop music. Alongside the trailer, the group released a new “OT7” photo featuring RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook in sleek suits, echoing the attire of their 1896 animated counterparts. The album Arirang is scheduled for global release on March 20, followed by a historic, live-streamed concert at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on March 21, which will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix. By anchoring their comeback in a narrative of cultural perseverance rather than a standard dance preview, BTS has once again redefined the boundaries of K-pop, proving that their music is a living bridge between Korea’s past and its global future.
