Indian Armed Forces arrive in Seychelles for joint military exercise LAMITIYE-2026

An Indian Armed Forces contingent has arrived in Seychelles to participate in the 11th edition of the joint military exercise Exercise LAMITIYE, aimed at strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries.
The exercise, titled Exercise LAMITIYE-2026, will be held from March 9 to 20 at the Seychelles Defence Academy. The term “Lamitiye” means “friendship” in the Creole language and reflects the spirit of partnership between India and Seychelles. The biennial exercise has been conducted in Seychelles since 2001.
This year’s edition marks a significant milestone as it includes participation from all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian contingent comprises personnel from the Assam Regiment, along with representatives from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.
As part of the exercise, the Indian Navy has deployed the warship INS Trikand, while the Air Force is participating with a Lockheed C‑130 Hercules aircraft.
Officials said the joint exercise will focus on enhancing cooperation and operational synergy between the two forces, particularly in sub-conventional operations in semi-urban environments. The training will also aim to improve coordination during peacekeeping missions and provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange operational experience, skills, and best practices.
During the 12-day exercise, troops from India and the Seychelles Defense Forces will jointly plan and execute a series of tactical drills designed to counter potential threats in semi-urban settings. The program will include field training exercises, combat discussions, case studies, lectures, and demonstrations. The exercise will conclude with a two-day validation phase showcasing joint operational capabilities and the use of modern equipment and technology.
Defense officials said the exercise is expected to further strengthen bilateral military ties and deepen mutual understanding between the armed forces of the two nations.
Earlier, on the sidelines of the International Fleet Review 2026 held in Visakhapatnam, senior naval leaders from both countries held discussions to enhance maritime cooperation. During the interaction, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan met Major General Michael Rosette to review ongoing collaboration in areas such as naval training, regular port calls, and hydrographic cooperation under the SAGAR initiative.
