IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals Dealt Heavy Blow as Mitchell Starc Set to Miss Opening Phase

The Delhi Capitals’ aspirations for a strong start in the upcoming IPL 2026 season have encountered a significant hurdle with the news that their marquee fast bowler, Mitchell Starc, will miss the initial stages of the tournament. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed today that the veteran left-arm pacer is being held back as part of a comprehensive workload management strategy following a grueling twelve-month international schedule. Starc, who was a pivotal figure in Australia’s recent Ashes triumph and a key performer in the Big Bash League, has reportedly bowled more deliveries in Test cricket over the past year than almost any other specialist fast bowler globally. Given that Australia is set to embark on a massive 21-Test cycle starting this August—including high-stakes tours of South Africa, India, and England—the Australian board has opted for a cautious “return-to-play” protocol. This decision means the Capitals will be without their ₹11.75 crore strike weapon for at least the first few matches, forcing the team management to look toward their domestic reserves and other overseas options like Dushmantha Chameera or Lungi Ngidi to lead the attack.

The ripple effect of Cricket Australia’s conservative approach extends beyond Delhi, as other franchises are also reeling from similar unavailabilities. Starc joins fellow “Big Three” pacers Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Josh Hazlewood (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) in missing the opening act of the 19th IPL edition. For the Capitals, Starc’s absence is particularly stinging because his ability to swing the new ball and deliver lethal yorkers at the death was central to their tactical blueprint for the Powerplay and final overs. While the franchise is hopeful that Starc will join the squad once he clears his final fitness assessments in a few weeks, the lack of his veteran presence in the dressing room could impact the team’s early momentum. With the tournament opener scheduled for March 28, the Capitals’ coaching staff is now working overtime to recalibrate their bowling combinations to ensure they don’t fall behind in the highly competitive points table during the veteran’s absence.
