Kelvin Cinema Begins a New Chapter with the Launch of Modern Two-Screen Multiplex ‘Kelvin Gold Cinema’

One of Assam’s oldest and most iconic cinema halls has reopened in a new avatar, marking a significant milestone in the state’s cultural landscape. Kelvin Cinema Hall, established in 1935 by Jeevanram Goenka at the bustling Fancy Bazar in Guwahati, has made a grand comeback after nearly nine decades, preserving its legacy while embracing a contemporary identity. The historic venue has now introduced a state-of-the-art two-screen multiplex named Kelvin Gold Cinema within its original premises.

The new multiplex offers a total seating capacity of 499, including 24 luxurious recliners, and features sleek, futuristic design elements paired with advanced film technology. The grand inauguration took place on Wednesday evening in the presence of NEDFi CMD PVSNL Murty, renowned film trade analyst and media personality Komal Nahta, and prominent figures from Assamese cinema including Ravi Sharma, Zerifa Wahid, Pranjal Saikia, Purnima Pathak Saikia, Manjula Barua, Manju Borah, Mridula Baruah, Jahnu Barua, Seema Biswas, Manisha Hazarika, Reema Das, Kapil Bora, and Padma Shri award-winning journalist and author Patricia Mukhim.

For decades, the Goenka family has played a crucial role in shaping Assam’s business and cultural sectors. After establishing their early success in Shillong, they expanded into film exhibition, transforming Kelvin into a popular entertainment landmark. The hall introduced advanced technology of its time, hosted numerous premieres of Assamese films, celebrated jubilee screenings of Hindi movies, and became the first cinema in Guwahati to screen English classics such as Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. Its golden era included the remarkable 53-week run of Jai Santoshi Maa, which remains a cherished memory among generations of cinephiles.

Shankar Lal Goenka, one of the guiding forces behind Kelvin’s legacy, expressed that the reopening is an emotional and inspiring moment for the family. “Kelvin has lived through the memories of generations. Reviving it in a modern form feels like carrying forward a heritage while creating something new for today’s audience. The heartfelt response from young film enthusiasts and families proves that Kelvin still holds a special place in Guwahati,” he said.

Kelvin Gold Cinema is equipped with Christie 2K laser projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, Pulse iWave audio system, and premium 3D capabilities. The recliner seats offer in-seat food and beverage service, USB charging ports, and ample legroom. A wide range of snacks, beverages, and combo meals—both indulgent and healthy—are available for visitors. The venue also offers ample parking and easy accessibility, aiming to serve film lovers across the city.

Ratan Jain, Director of Gold Cinema, said the new multiplex is ready to offer Guwahati audiences a truly royal movie-watching experience. Hashmukh Shah, also a director of Gold Cinema, added that the goal is to build a modern entertainment hub that resonates with today’s viewers.
