Mass Rally on March 16 Announced by NSF Over Vande Mataram Directiv`e

Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has planned a mass public rally in Kohima on March 16 to protest the Ministry of Home Affairs’ directive from January 28, 2026, which mandates the singing of Vande Mataram at official functions and educational institutions. NSF leaders, including president Mteisuding Heraang and general secretary Kenilo Kent, have articulated concerns about the directive’s implications for the Naga homeland, advocating for the democratic principle that respects the conscience and will of the people. The rally aims to provide a collective platform for the Naga populace to express their opposition to the perceived compulsory imposition of Vande Mataram, while also reinforcing their rights and identity.

In conjunction with the Kohima rally, NSF has urged all federating units and subordinate bodies across the Naga territory to organize peaceful demonstrations on the same day. Educational institutions under these units are instructed to hold symbolic and peaceful actions within their campuses, highlighting the movement’s goals of defending the rights and beliefs of Naga students, affirming cultural identity, and exhibiting solidarity for their dignity and rights.

Moreover, the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has voiced serious concerns regarding the Home Ministry directive, echoing NSF’s stance. AKM representatives, president Lanulemba Longchar and general secretary Aomayang Longkumer, recognize the historical and cultural sensitivities surrounding the Naga people and stress the necessity for educational institutions in the region to foster inclusive learning and respect for diverse perspectives. AKM has therefore directed that schools and colleges in Mokokchung district should not mandate the singing or playing of Vande Mataram in their establishments, reflecting the community’s need for careful consideration and dialogue on such symbolic measures.
