Incessant rainfall in the Doyang River’s catchment area has led to a significant rise in water levels at the Doyang Reservoir. If the downpour continues, the reservoir is expected to reach its Full Reservoir Level (FRL), necessitating the opening of the dam’s radial gates to release excess water in a controlled manner. The Wokha District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued a caution to the public, advising them to stay clear of the downstream areas of the Doyang River and the Foothill region.
Activities such as bathing, swimming, fishing, and camping along the riverside should be strictly avoided during the period of water release. The DDMA’s advisory underscores the potential risks posed by the elevated water levels and aims to prevent any untoward incidents. The controlled release of water is expected to flow downstream of the Doyang Power House, further emphasizing the need for public caution. In a related development, a major landslide occurred on August 6 along the Chakhabama-Zunheboto road, disrupting a crucial route connecting Kohima, Pfutsero, and Zunheboto.
The landslide, which struck approximately 11 kilometers from Kohima near the Dzüü bridge, has caused significant blockages due to falling rocks and loose soil. The Chakhabama-Zunheboto highway is vital for regional connectivity, and the ongoing monsoon season has heightened the risk of additional landslides. Local officials have called for swift clearing and stabilization efforts to mitigate further disruptions and ensure safe passage for travelers.
