Nagaland campaigning period draws to a close

As the electoral fervor reaches its crescendo, the Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland, Vyasan. R IAS, has issued a pivotal notification marking the culmination of the campaigning period for the General Election to the 18th Lok Sabha, 2024, specifically for the Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency. According to the provisions outlined in Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the campaigning activities are slated to conclude promptly at 4:00 PM on April 17th, 2024. With the clock ticking, stringent regulations come into effect, mandating strict adherence from all stakeholders involved in the electoral process. Post the stipulated time, individuals are prohibited from convening or participating in public gatherings, including meetings and processions related to the election. Furthermore, the dissemination of election-related material through cinematographic, television, or similar mediums, as well as organizing entertainment events aimed at influencing voters, stands strictly proscribed.

The repercussions for contravening these regulations are severe, with potential penalties including imprisonment for up to two years, fines, or both. The enforcement of these measures is paramount to maintaining the sanctity and impartiality of the electoral process. Of significant note is the directive concerning the immediate departure of political functionaries and party workers from outside the constituency post the conclusion of the campaign period. This directive is essential to preserving the atmosphere conducive to free and fair polling, ensuring that undue external influence does not impede the democratic process.

However, allowances are made for office bearers of political parties who hold positions of authority within the state. These individuals are permitted to remain within the constituency but are required to declare their place of stay at the State Headquarters. Additionally, their movements are restricted to their designated party offices and places of residence during this critical period.
