Nagaland State Election Commissioner (SEC), T. John Longkumer, has announced plans for a special summary revision of the electoral roll for all Municipal and Town Councils across the state. Longkumer addressed the media, outlining the key dates and procedures for this crucial electoral process. The revision, scheduled with reference to 1st January 2024 as the qualifying date, aims to update and accommodate changes since the last revision to ensure the smooth conduct of Municipal and Town Council elections across all 39 councils. Longkumer announced the Commission’s notification, detailing the timeline for various stages of the revision process. The draft publication of the Electoral roll is slated for 8th March 2024, with the period for lodging claims and objections spanning from 11th to 20th March 2024. The disposal of claims and objections is set to occur from 21st to 27th March 2024.

Additionally, from 28th March to 3rd April 2024, there will be a window for filing appeals to the respective appellate authorities. The disposal of claims and objections by the appellate authority will follow from 4th to 6th April. Deputy Commissioners will serve as the appellate authorities for their respective districts. Following these stages, the preparation of the list of amendments post-appeal and the final publication of the electoral roll are scheduled for 8th to 10th April 2024 and 12th April 2024, respectively.

Longkumer also provided insights into the previous revision conducted in 2022, highlighting the total number of electors and wards for the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections. Notably, the last revision concluded on 24th November, revealing a total of 3,60,150 electors in 418 wards across 693 Polling Stations (PS). Of the 39 Municipal and Town Councils, Longkumer specified that three districts—Kohima, Dimapur, and Mokokchung—are under Municipal Councils, while the remaining 36 fall under Town Councils.
