Northeast poised to lead India’s sustainable fashion movement, says Union Minister Scindia

In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of “Fashion for Environment and Empowerment,” Union Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the northeast’s unparalleled potential to lead India’s sustainable fashion revolution on Tuesday. During a high-level task force meeting aimed at bolstering the northeast’s handloom and handicrafts industry, the DoNER Minister also emphasized the area’s artisanal legacy, world-class workmanship, and ingrained eco-conscious practices. Union Minister Scindia stated, “The northeast must use its rich handloom and handicraft heritage to create jobs, encourage innovation, and place India’s cultural heritage on the international scene.”

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio presided over the virtual conference, which was attended by senior representatives from Manipur and the Union governments, as well as Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, and Assam Handloom and Textiles Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma. A strategic plan aimed at modernizing the industry through improved infrastructure, integration of technology and design, and talent development was presented by DoNER Minister Scindia. The establishment of Common Facility Centers, the creation of artisan clusters, and the selection of two to three flagship products for regional and national promotion are important initiatives. By bringing Self-Help Groups into compliance with international standards, creating a bottom-up value chain, and facilitating the growth of regional crafts on a national and worldwide scale, the strategy places a strong emphasis on market preparedness, according to an official statement. The task force meeting’s main goal was to revitalize the handicraft and handlooms ecosystem by implementing specific interventions such better market access, technological utilization, capacity building, and the development of sustainable livelihoods. In order to advance the handicrafts and handlooms industry as a pillar of inclusive growth and sustainable development in the area, the task force intends to collaborate with all relevant parties.

Following the meeting, the chief minister of Nagaland praised Union Ministers Singh and Scindia for their support of the region’s development in a post on X. “I ask all states to act immediately and follow the draft document’s timelines,” Chief Minister Rio stated. “Convened a meeting of the High Level Task Force on Handloom and Handicrafts in the NER,” he wrote in another post on the X. The conversations were productive and provided us with insightful information to further the industry. Strong, workable plans to support and advance the industry throughout the Northeastern states will result from the ideas exchanged.

We met with Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Ji to review the Nagaland action plan. I appreciate his time, empathy, and insightful criticism. The Chief Minister wrote in another post, “Looking forward to his continued guidance & support in ensuring that development reaches every corner of the State.”
