The Ang Mai-led National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang (NSCN-K) has declared its intention to initiate official peace talks with India and Myanmar, affirming its pursuit of peace, growth, and progress for the region, asserting that this decision does not stem from weakness. In a statement signed by NSCN-K chairman Ang Mai, vice chairman Nyeiton Konyak, and general secretary Kughalu Mulatonu, the group articulated its commitment to ensuring peace, prosperity, and development across all Naga-inhabited areas through formal dialogue with India and Myanmar.
The statement outlined that discussions with India would specifically focus on matters of sovereignty or agreements that transcend the confines of the Indian constitution. It clarified that any temporary arrangement would surpass the Framework and Agreed Position. Furthermore, the NSCN-K clarified its independent stance, asserting that it is not aligned with any NGOs, civil society groups, political parties, or government bodies, positioning itself solely as the protector of Naga society.
Underlining its dedication to Naga nationalism for sovereignty, the group emphasized its principles of self-reliance, socialism, and the ethos of “Nagaland for Christ”. These foundational beliefs were established in response to the Shillong Accord of November 11, 1975, which the group views as the Naga National Council (NNC) surrendering to India.Reaffirming its allegiance to the Khaplang Plan of 1997, which advocates for peace and unity among the Nagas under the banner of “Forgive and Forget,” within the framework of “Nagaland for Christ”, the NSCN-K emphasized its unwavering commitment to these principles.
