Pungro to go plastic-free from May 1; complete ban on single-use items announced

In a major step towards environmental protection, the administration of Pungro town in Nagaland has announced a total ban on single-use plastic (SUP) items starting May 1, 2025. The decision, aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable living, will be strictly enforced under the directive of Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) James T. Khulu Tikhir.

The order comes in line with the directives of the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, and the Urban Development Department, reflecting the state government’s growing emphasis on eco-friendly policies.

According to the official order, the ban will cover all plastic carry bags, irrespective of their thickness or micron size, as well as plastic bottles (both water and soft drinks) with a capacity of less than one litre. The ban is applicable to a wide range of establishments—educational institutions, government and private offices, shops, hotels, restaurants, religious bodies, banquet halls, and industrial units—within the jurisdiction of the Pungro Town Council.

To ensure strict compliance, authorities have also introduced heavy penalties for violators:

₹10,000 fine for first-time offenders

₹20,000 fine for repeat offences

Revocation of business or operational permits for habitual violations

ADC Tikhir emphasized the need for active community participation in this effort. “This initiative is not just a regulatory measure, but a step towards a healthier and cleaner future for our town. We urge all residents, institutions, and business owners to cooperate and adopt environmentally sustainable alternatives,” he stated.

The administration has also begun awareness campaigns to encourage people to switch to reusable bags, glass or steel containers, and other biodegradable alternatives. The move is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste generation in the town and set an example for other regions in Nagaland.
