Shama Sikander reveals she suffered from depression: ‘I even tried to die by suicide’

Shama Sikander, who rose to fame after her appearance in several music videos in the popular television show Yeh Meri Life Hain in the 90s, suddenly disappeared from the small screen. The actress has now revealed about her absence.
Shama Sikander, who disappeared from the small screen at the peak of her career, recently revealed what made her leave the television industry. The actress rose to fame with her music videos in the 90s. Her popularity got boosted by the lead role in the show Yeh Meri Life Hain. Yet, things soon turned sour.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Shama claimed that the real reason for her sudden disappearance from acting was “burnout”. He said, “I worked for a long time without a break and it started affecting my mental health. I started feeling uneasy and decided to stay indoors. I stopped going out and socializing. I was going through depression and even tried to commit suicide but thankfully my parents saved me in time.
Shama Sikander also spoke in detail about her battle with depression. Sharing the reason behind feeling depressed, the actress said that, “I think the industry has a lot of unrealistic expectations from people. For this it is necessary that you become what they understand about you and gradually you lose yourself completely in darkness. When I felt jealous, I left stardom and the industry and took my time for treatment.Sharing another reason, Shama claimed that she was a people pleaser, which ultimately had a huge impact on her.
The actress claimed that there was not much awareness about depression in the early 2000s. “My parents couldn’t understand my reason for wanting to stay home and not be productive at all.” However, he supported her through bad times.
The 43-year-old actress revealed that she has no plans to return to television as she is not ready to work for long hours. “I like OTT projects,” said Shama.
