Statewide Public Hearings Planned by Nagaland State Commission for Women

In a significant initiative, the Nagaland State Commission for Women, in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, will hold ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ (Public Hearings) from March 9 to 13, in honor of International Women’s Day. This week-long event aims to provide women with a platform to voice grievances related to issues such as domestic violence, workplace harassment, trafficking, and more, enabling them to seek institutional support directly.

The public hearings will feature dedicated benches comprising members from various authorities including the Nagaland State Commission for Women, District Administration, the District Legal Services Authority (DALSA), police, legal experts, and protection officers. Their responsibilities will include the immediate hearing of complaints, registration and escalation of serious cases, offering legal guidance, and ensuring prompt follow-ups. Walk-in complaints will also be accepted during the hearings.

This initiative is designed to address the grievances of women, particularly in rural areas, by directly taking the grievance redressal mechanism to the grassroots level, thus bridging institutional gaps and ensuring swift access to justice. It symbolizes a shift from symbolic celebrations to genuine justice delivery and empowerment for women, reinforcing the shared commitment of national and state organizations to create safer environments for women throughout India. The hearings are scheduled across various districts, including Tuensang, Mokokchung, and Kohima, on specified dates from March 9 to 13.
