Expressing concern over the prevalence of fire incidents in Dzukou Valley, Nagaland MLA Naiba Konyak has emphasized the importance of implementing preventive measures to avert future occurrences. During a session in the State Assembly, Konyak posed a starred question regarding this issue to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. In his reply, Rio indicated that no individuals have been identified or apprehended in connection with the fire incidents to date.
Rio also addressed the financial aspects concerning the use of Army helicopters for firefighting efforts, mentioning that the invoices for the latest hiring of Indian Air Force choppers are still pending. He outlined a comprehensive strategy pursued by the department aimed at mitigating forest fires in Dzukou Valley. This strategy involves training community volunteers from the Western and Southern Angami regions, in collaboration with the Angami Youth Organization (AYO), scheduled to take place at Khonoma from March 3 to 9, 2025.
Furthermore, Rio informed that plans are in motion to establish watch towers for enhanced early fire detection in high-risk areas, procure firefighting equipment such as beaters, drones, and water backpacks, create and maintain fire lines, and train Rapid Response Teams (RRTs). Additional measures include installing early warning systems with SMS alerts and sirens, as well as employing drone surveillance to monitor hard-to-access regions.
