Kinunger village in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district fell prey to vandalism in the early hours of May 03, as unidentified individuals wreaked havoc on the serene community. Located approximately 20 kilometers from the bustling town of Mokokchung, the village bore the brunt of destructive acts that unfolded in the dead of night.The ordeal began around 2 AM, with two vacant houses becoming targets of arson, setting off a blaze that quickly spread to engulf the structures and a nearby granary. Despite valiant efforts from villagers and fire tenders, the inferno could only be subdued after inflicting significant damage.
Fortunately, the houses were unoccupied at the time, sparing any occupants from harm. However, the senseless destruction didn’t cease there. Residents were jolted awake by the sight of smoke billowing from the main church building. Quick-thinking villagers managed to contain the fire, preventing it from devouring the entire church. Upon investigation, authorities discovered plastic bottles filled with petrol inside the church premises, indicating a deliberate act of sabotage.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, it emerged that the village was scheduled to host a Church revival prior to the malicious incident.In response to the heinous act, authorities have reportedly apprehended an individual in connection with the case.Expressing shock and vehement condemnation, Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader, Y Patton, denounced the attempted torching of the church in Kinunger village. Describing the act as unprecedented and antithetical to Christian principles, Patton labeled it “outrageous and numbing”.
